Aeronautical Engineering Career Episode 1

Project Name: CREATION OF NEW DOMESTIC AERIAL ROUTES FOR THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: This project was conducted during author work in “company name “situated in Mexican city. He performed the major work in this project under the sound supervision of “supervisor/ leader name “for 9 month time period commencing from 15th January and completed it on 20th September 2013.

Engineering Activities of Aeronautical Engineer:

  1. To prepare a proper management plan to execute this project successfully.
  2. To perform the necessary survey and investigation to determine the feasibility of the new route.
  3. To perform the performance calculation of the fleet that was used to transport goods to the new routes based on manufacture handbooks and operating conditions such as weather and runway distances.
  4. To perform the calculation for the cruise height based on the terrain elevation and make sure that this encompassed the air traffic control regulations.
  5. To define an alternative airport for all the routes in case of an emergency or flight diverted for severe weather conditions.
  6. To provide all the information to the related authorities to achieve the certification of the new routes.
  7.  To elaborate the flight plane and update it in the navigation equipment system for the pilots.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 1 and its solution

Implementation of approach routes for the free obstacles

The author found that one of the airports had too many obstacles for the final approach of the aircraft. Due to this problem, he concluded that it was geographically too dangerous to allow the landing of the aircraft in that airport. Since the primary objective of this project was the development of a safer route for the aircraft; the problem at hand presented a real hurdle in accomplishing that objective. Consequently, for finding a solution to the problem, he planned to redesign an alternative route 15 degrees away from the original design. This resulted in the aircraft avoiding the obstacles in linear order. As a result, the landing of aircraft became safer ensuring that the approach routes would not be disturbed by the obstacles.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 1 and its solution

Insufficient space for the aircraft

The author noted down that the Mexican city Airport did not have enough slot for aircraft. This was a hurdle in implementing the project. As the slots were considered to be under the jurisdiction of the concerned airport. The airport was liable for allowing the slot holder to schedule the departure or landing in the airport during the specific period. He noticed that the problem could lead to a delay in the implementation of the project. Hence for resolving this problem, he agreed with one of the domestic airliners to carry cargo to the destination airport where it could be distributed without any delays.

Aeronautical Engineering Career Episode 2

Project Name: REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF ENGINE MODEL IAE V2500 FOR EQUIPMENT A320-1628

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: This project was done while author was employed as a Maintenance Engineer in “Airline name”. He was assigned to conduct and manage the works related to the installation and maintenance of Engine models. The project commenced on August, 2015 and was completed on December, 2015. The location of the project was in Mexico City.

Engineering Activities of Aeronautical Engineer:

  1. To create and sign the engineering order to perform the project tasks.
  2. To inspect the safety provisions and adopt corrective measures.
  3. To install and inspect the central bolts system that engage the engine to the pylon.
  4. To perform the borosopical inspection to all the stages of the turbine, compressor and combustion chamber.
  5. To collect all the technical information and prepare a report of the tasks to obtain approval from the aviation authority.
  6. To work in coordination with the chief engineer and technicians to make sure that the aircraft engine is correctly removed and installed.
  7. To organize meetings with the supervisor, prepared progress reports and submit the report to the department.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 2 and its solution

Tool selection

The author referred to the specification manual and then, designed and manufactured an alternative tool that could perform the same task with the same efficiency. Prepared the design of the tool using AutoCAD and Solid Works. In this manner, the workshop tool was procured for removing the combustion chamber.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 2 and its solution

Vibrations being higher than predicted during the testing phase

The author proposed a dynamic balance of the main fan module. Also replaced eight bolts in the first stage of blades. Conducted the operational test again and found the vibrations to be within the limit.

Aeronautical Engineering Career Episode 3

Project Name: INCORPORATION OF EXTRA ROW SEATS AND NEW CABIN CONFIGURATION FOR THE A320 FLEET-2182

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: This project was performed during author tenure at “Airline name” situated in Mexico. He took seven months to complete the project. He started it in the February of 2014 and concluded it in August of 2014. He worked in this project as a Maintenance Engineer under the supervision of “supervisor name”.

Engineering Activities of Aeronautical Engineer:

  1. To consult the aircraft manufacturer to present the plan for the management of this project.
  2. To calculate the new center of gravity to maintain the stability and performance of the aircraft.
  3. To analyze the performance graphs of maximum take-off weight and maximum landing weight for different airports pressure altitudes.
  4. To perform different tests to obtain the certification of new seats from the engineer in charge.
  5. To perform the structural inspection of the aircraft fuselage and the framework which was the part that clenched the entire seat.
  6. To update the documentation and distributed the new data to the involved such as air operation, ground handling and flight crew to ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 3 and its solution

Problem during testing phase of the compartments

The author faced a problem during the testing phase of the project. Found that some overhead compartments for the luggage were not aligned with the new seat configuration. Hence, there was a need for adding some extra compartments in the Airbus. This problem was critical because it would be hectic for the customers to use the overhead luggage system if not aligned with seats and could destroy the company reputation. So, to resolve the problem, author proposed to procure the components from France. As the previous calculation was performed using the manufacturer specifications of previous components; the solitary change of manufacturer led to recalculate the weight and balance of the Airbus using the new manufacturer's specification. This helped in aligning the overhead compartments for luggage with the new seat configuration.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 3 and its solution

Problem due to old certification for the cabin

The author faced a particular problem in renewing the certification for the cabin. Due to the new certification in the cabin; the need for emergency equipment also increased with the increase in the number of passengers. Specifically, the fire extinguishers were needed in larger quantities. So, author installed a number of fire extinguishers. However, the modification affected the maximum take-off weight. The change in take-off weight could create a direct impact on the overall process of flight. Hence, to solve this problem, he sought advice from the manufacturer. Based on the manufacturer’s suggestion, he decided to remove the curtains and partitions of the cabin. The weight reduced to a considerable range.
