Telecommunication Field Engineer Career Episode 1

Project Name: DSLAM - CEN MIGRATION, NETWORK DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, CONFIGURATION AND INTEGRATION OF IP NETWORK

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: Author performed DSLAM-CEN migration project while working as an executive at “company branch “which is a child company of “company name “of India. He started working on this project from 1st October 2013 and finished on 31st March 2014. He was responsible for Network design, implementation, configuration and integration of IP network.

Engineering Activities of Telecommunication Field Engineer:

  1. Initially, to visit the new site for its analysis and collect the required information on the provisioning of CEN devices for 2G, 3G, and LTE services.
  2. To prepare the schedule and methodology for the conduction of this project and got it approved through the project manager before the commencement of other tasks.
  3. To create the network diagram for the new site and various services based on VPRN and CPIPE.
  4. To allocate resources such as IP & bandwidth as well as defining the priority of DSLAM customers.
  5. To be responsible for the provisioning of several routers for mobility sites and customer links by creating VPRN and CPIPE based services on routers through the application of different protocols.
  6. To engage in the remote configuration of newly installed switches & routers as well as remote firmware upgradation of old devices.
  7. Judging the amount of required bandwidth, the stop band frequencies, to calculate the size of the frequency band to estimate if the bandwidth was enough to carry all the data or not.
  8. To perform the task of shifting of traffic from DSLAM network to CEN network.
  9. To configure the hardware parts analyzing each components virtually to synchronize the combination of the hardware component.
  10. To test the IP addresses, configured the DNS and other network parameters for the network.
  11. To test the frequency ranges of the routers, their coverage ranges and along with the network securities they offered.
  12. To test the customer traffic after migration and verified the quality of work.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 1 and its solution

One of the issues he faced in this project was during the phase of migration for the segregation of customer traffic (IPTV & Broadband) as these were running of different ports in DSLAM. He solved this problem during migration by configuring VLAN and segregating the traffic.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 1 and its solution

Another issue faced in this project was due to the timing for migration as migration was used to take place in the night but during this time, the use of these services was minimum for the broadband customer and this caused confusion in determining if the service was successfully migrated or not. He solved this issue by using load balances functionality of routes to shift live traffic without any downtime requirement & monitored the live traffic or broadband customers in the daytime. This functionality helped in reducing the outage time of customer life.

Telecommunication Field Engineer Career Episode 2

Project Name:BHARTI AIRTEL LIMITED MOBILITY (2G,3G, AND LTE) NETWORK SETUP, SITE PLANNING, HARDWARE INSTALLATION PLANNING, AND IT PLANNING AND OLD NETWORK UP GRADATIONS

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: Author made several achievements in this project which are explained thoroughly in this career episode highlighting his roles and responsibilities. He worked as an Executive in “company name “which is located in NOC Manesar, Gurgaon. He used his theoretical as well as technical knowledge and managerial skills to smartly handle all the activities and aroused problems of the project. The project started on May 1, 2014, and was successfully completed on February 1, 2016.

Engineering Activities of Telecommunication Field Engineer:

  1. To implement project management methodologies to carry out his responsibilities in the more effective way.
  2. To plan a logical network design, site, hardware installation, IP, network upgrades and event implementation in the network.
  3. To start my work on the design of network architecture where the factors like availability, manageability, scalability, and security were highly considered.
  4. To prepare network diagrams and define ports for different sites according to the designed diagram.
  5. To analyze the level of security provided on these routers and devices against the threats that were potential in these devices.
  6. To allocate the resources to the sites as per the network architecture.
  7. To assign ports to the configuration of the switches, hubs, bridges, and routers making sure that data were being sent and received without any delays.
  8. To include ALCATEL LUCENT, HUAWEI and CISCO routers for Mobility sites and customer links by creating VPRN, EPIPE, and CPIPE based services on routers.
  9. To coordinate with the field team in IP configuration during the installation of hardware.
  10. To form multiple types of tunnels especially C-pipe and E-pipe.
  11. To update the Daily bases project report and perform provisioning/maintenance activities.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 2 and its solution

During the configuration of different sites, he was unable to configure the IP of the particular region. After reviewing the IP pool, he found the use of wrong IP and that pool was already used for another region. Hence, he traced the route of the IP and recognized the correct IP pool used for that particular region to solve this issue.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 2 and its solution

Next, he faced hardware issues while making the site live. Then, he created SAP just like in E-pipe using a different port, removed that SAP from the E-pipe and provided loopback in it. Once it was done, the site started piping through from which he found the fault in port allocation. So, he assigned another interface for that site. Further, he collected the debug data and sent them to the vendor.

Telecommunication Field Engineer Career Episode 3

Project Name:ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND (RBS) PROJECT: OPERATION AND NETWORK MAINTENANCE SUPPORT, MIGRATION SUPPORT, HARDWARE UP GRADATION SUPPORT, AND CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

Project Type: Work Based Career Episode Project

Demographics: It’s a huge project which commenced on 15th February 2016 and still ongoing. The project is being done at Gurgaon. “Company name “is the company where he was working with.

Engineering Activities of Telecommunication Field Engineer:

  9. To conduct a regular group meeting and prepared the progress reports which helped to figure out the work completion percentage.

Problem & Solutions:

  1. Problem 1 for Career Episode 3 and its solution

As author was working on the project, he faced problems due to the Sea-fiber outage which resulted in site down problems. Bank can’t perform its transactions without the efficient networking environment. Network fluctuation problem was raised and the banking system was affected. Sea-fiber generally takes 50-60 days for the outage. So, he re-routed traffic by designing a new path or tunnel priority. He shifted the traffic over to the new path which was on another sea-fiber carrier.

  1. Problem 2 for Career Episode 3 and its solution

Another issue he faced was that customers complained frequently about the site down problems. He understood that the technical problem behind it was with the OS functioning. So, with the help of the vendor, OS was checked. He got to know that the OS was outdated. The first step he did was scheduling activity by checking with the customer for downtime. He remotely configured new OS to multiple site services.
