Problems & Solutions

  1. Problem 1 Career Episode 1 and its Solution

Author encountered difficulty in the voltage obtained from the boost converter while simulating the system. During the simulation, he faced the problem in the voltage output gained with the converter. While checking the output of the system, he faced the problem on the output voltage, which was observed on the simulation result. The final voltage obtained from the system was considerably low. Therefore, he researched the phenomenon of increasing the voltage output of the converter. He then checked the system with the value of the resistance as 1Kohm and the switching frequency as the 10 K Hz. With the help of the change in the value of the frequency and the resistance, he changed the value of the capacitor and the inductor used and simulated the system. While simulating the system with the change in the value of the capacitor and the inductor used, he obtained the appropriate voltage as 5v.

  1. Problem 2 Career Episode 1 and its Solution

He faced problem in the voltage output obtained from the fuel cell designed. While measuring the output voltage of the cell, he faced a problem in the improper voltage output. He was unable to find the problems related to the low output voltage. He then performed the electrolysis to form hydrogen gas in the solution by increasing the time of charging from 30 min to the 90 minutes. He then tested the output of the system and was able to obtain the output of the PEM cell as 1.20 volt.

  1. Problem 3 Career Episode 1 and its Solution

He faced problem in the proper operation of the switching circuit designed with the use of the MOSFET and the microprocessor. While testing the operation of the circuit with the oscillator, he faced problem in the proper operation of the circuit. Initially, while designing the circuit, he have used the microprocessor, Optocoupler and the resistive load of the suitable value. But while testing the system in the oscillator, he observed that the pulse was not generated properly with the circuit as the losses in the circuit was increased. He then checked the connection of the microprocessor and the other components used but could not found any problem. Thereafter, he reviewed the process of solving the problem related to the pulses generated by the system. He knew that the problem might be subjected to the performance of the microprocessor. He also found that the problem may be subjected due to the fluctuation on the 5V supply whose change affects the operation of the processor. He then changed the processor with the LM555 timer IC as the power, space and the losses in the IC was low then the processor with an excellent pulse generating capacity. He tested the pulse generated by the system in the oscilloscope and obtained the appropriate pules as required.

Problems & Solutions

  1. Problem 1 Career Episode 2 and its Solution

Author faced problem-related to the working of the rectifier designed in the project while simulating the circuit. He analyzed the designed circuit thoroughly but could not figure out any problem. He took the help of the internet to find a solution to the problem. He understood that the problem was experienced due to the alternation in the connection of the diode. He then checked the diode connected and found that one of the diodes used in the circuit was connected in the opposite direction, i.e. reversely connected instead to the forward connected. He then changed the connection of the diode from the reverse direction to that of a forward direction and simulated the system. After simulating the system by changing the connection of the diode, He was able to obtain the appropriate output voltage waveform as required by the system.

  1. Problem 2 Career Episode 2 and its Solution

He faced problem in the output DC obtained from the rectification circuit used in the system. He observed the circuit designed and noticed that the filters were not used in the circuit. Therefore, he defined the capacitor as a filter in the circuit. He connected the capacitor in the parallel with the rectifier circuit designed. Finally simulated the circuit designed by connecting the capacitor in the parallel. While simulating the circuit, he was able to notice the output wave increases linearly for a certain period of the time, and an appropriate DC wave output was obtained from the system.

  1. Problem 3  Career Episode 3 and its solution

He faced a problem in the output voltage obtained from the inverter circuit. He also took the help of the various articles published in the field of the UPS and after researching the various sector he came on the conclusion that the appropriate use of the inductor and the capacitor in the output solves the problem of the harmonics produced in the output waveform. He then used the suitable value of the inductor and the capacitor in parallel with the output of the inverter and simulated the system. While observing the output of the simulation result after inserting the capacitor and the inductor with appropriate specification and values in an appropriate manner, he obtained the sine wave but not smooth. Then, he connected the additional switch in the circuit and simulated the system. While simulating, he obtained the output wave of the system much smoother.

Problems & Solutions

  1. Problem 1 Career Episode 3 and its Solution

In case of lower power supply to the building, the equipment had chances of breakdown due to operation in lower voltages. Therefore to detect such condition and switch to the backup generator was necessary. But frequent switch off to the generator supply could be costly. So, initially, he had used the single-phase line from the nearby location. From the same location, the houses near to the hostel were using the lines. During the test of power, the loading condition was balanced. But as the number of residents increased on the hostel, the loading condition increased. Eventually, during a pick hour when the power was used by most of the neighborhood, the power supply to the hostel was lagging. Because of this, the system most of the time switched to a generator which was not effective. Therefore, he had to make changes on the circuit, and he analyzed the situation. Finally, he reached a conclusion to use the power supply from a three-phase line. With the application of the process, he was able to solve the problem, and the loading condition was balanced.

  1. Problem 2 Career Episode 3 and its  Solution

To check the proper installation of earthing, he checked it through earth test but found that all the wiring of the building were not earthed properly. He had connected all the earthing cable at one junction and dumped it into the ground. To acknowledge the problem, he carried out the various test. He found the test result positive for surface test and proceeded to the next testing method. The connected wire needed to have proper insulation and connection. In case of bad insulation, a fire may be caught, or electrical shock could be sensed. So in order to be safe from this disastrous effect, he executed to the megger test. He found that all the circuits were properly connected except the one on the ground floor. The test showed infinity value, which meant the connection was broke. He took the cable out and saw the cable had insulation worn out. He replaced the cable and performed the test again. All the building connection were in perfect condition.

  1. Problem 3 Career Episode 3 and its solution

He computed the wire size required for the conduction of such current value but faced problem in determining the standard size of the wire. He used the Lumen method for designing of light effect. He was able to evaluate the light illuminance on the floor and space using the software.  He calculated the wire cable diameter and established a connection between the customer distribution centre and central transmission line. Next, he calculated the size of the generator required and installed it. The connection between the generator and the distribution centre had to be capable to conduct a current around 627 amperes.  Computed the wire size required for the conduction of such current value, but he was unable to find the cable size on IEE standard table. Then, he started to refer to online articles for the solution. He found that using two cables could solve the problem. Hence, he used a two conductor cable and connected them in parallel. These parallel connected cables were capable of conducting 313 amperes current each.
