    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career episode 1 and its solution

While evaluating the minimum steel bar requirement for the design of one-way slab, author found that the steel bar number based on the architect’s calculation was not sufficient. He realized that the two steel bars were inadequate for slab design for both positive and negative bending moments. He noticed that this insufficient steel bar number posed the threat of an unsafe slab design. He re-evaluated this value for ensuring a safe design. He realized that a total of three NI2 steel bars were necessary for both positive and negative bending moments so that the slab design would be safe for construction.

    2. Problem 2 Career episode 1 and its solution

He analyzed the beam design for the construction of the office building. He evaluated the minimum requirement of steel bars for the positive bending during the beam design. He found that the steel reinforcement area of about 1497 mm2 was not adequate to ensure the safety of beams during the concrete structure design. He found that the use of four steel bars could not assure the design safety. He realized that an additional reinforcement with 300 mm spacing was necessary to increase the reinforcement area so that the beam design would be safe.

Civil Engineering Draftsperson Career Episode 2

Project Name: Design and Evaluation of Concrete Structures

Project Type: Academic Based Career Episode Project

Demographics:This project was accomplished from February 2017- September 2017 by the proper support and guidance of “supervisor name. During this project, author was designated as a student in “university name” which is located at Swinburne, Australia.

Engineering Activities of Civil Engineering Draftsperson:

    1. To perform detail literature on design inputs, requirements on vertical and horizontal curves, pavement design charts and parameters for road design.
    2. To perform the cross-sections design of the road along the route through freehand sketching.
    3. To perform manual design of horizontal alignment (HAL) of the road geometry in accordance to design considerations.
    4. To perform the selection of suitable radii for the circular curves through calculating minimum radius using f (maximum desirable for trucks) and maximum E for the operating speed of the road.
    5. To make a report for the submission to project supervisor for his approval and started to design the HAL in AutoCAD CSD using the approved design elements.
    6. To select design grade line by ensuring minimization of earthworks, maximum grade limit for the road type, grades leading to intersections, etc.
    7. To achieve the minimum balanced earthworks for the sustainable design and coordinated it with the HAL design to ensure safety.
    8. To perform the final design of vertical and horizontal alignment in AutoCAD CSD with the alignment table.
    9. To take reference of the Route Plan file for horizontal tensile strain, vertical compressive strain and pavement deformation by considering AADT of 1500 vehicle per day, subgrade soil of 4% CBR, asphalt surfacing of thickness 25 mm.
    10. To optimize the VAL design by moving IPs of VC until the balanced minimum total EW volume was achieved.
    11. To perform pavement design including the calculations of cover requirements for each layer and subgrade, traffic loading, the thickness of each layer, etc

    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career Episode 2 and its solution

While plotting the mass haul diagram, there was difficulty in retrieving the data from the Earthworks report. This created a problem in the analysis of the design. To solve this problem, author first saved the CSD EW report as a text file. Then he put this text file in the Excel to separate the data in the separate cell. Then he selected chainages and cumulative volumes and deleted the rest data and saved the file in Excel. Then he cleaned the data of this two column to make the two columns with data in consecutive cells. After separation of these data in separate columns, he used this data to make the mass haul diagram.

    2. Problem 2 Career Episode 2 and its solution

There was the problem while calculation of grades. While determining the RLs and chainages of all IPs along the design guidelines, he noticed that the datum RL was different for each printout. This created problem in the finalization of guidelines. To solve this problem, he consulted with his supervisor and found the reason for this difference. The difference was due to the software which tried to fit each section with the designated vertical scale. Due to which it changed the Datum RL from which the vertical elevations of the points at different changes were measured for that section. Thus he read the RLs for the existing surface row for calculation of grades.

Civil Engineering Draftsperson Career Episode 3

Project Name: Design of Residential Slabs and Footings

Project Type: Academic Based Career Episode Project

Engineering Activities of Civil Engineering Draftsperson:

    1. To visit the site and collected samples for each borehole to study the properties of the soil like moisture contents, soil movement.
    2. To scale down the house plan layout and placed it in the given contour outline for Pre-constructional excavation. To selected the appropriate scale of 1:100 in the AutoCAD for preparing the house plan layout.
    3. To develop detail slab design for internal beams and crossed sectional beams following Australian standard.
    4. To devise a plan for cut and filled operation in order to maintain the proper ground level for installation of the slab. To prepare the layout for reduced level operation, cut and fill operation using AutoCAD.
    5. To conclude that no retaining wall was required to restrain the soil movement based borehole sample test result.
    6. To estimate the volume of the concrete required for the construction of each layer of the beam, spaced area and slab.
    7. To calculate the effect of the existing eucalyptus tree on slab design and took possible measures to avoid soil movement.
    8. To calculate the total volume of the concrete by summing the slab volume and beam volume whose value was 62.969 m3.
    9. To plan to use a thicker beam to make the slab more rigid and the pier to eliminate different seasonal influences due to the tree.
    10. To regularly consult with my supervisor during soil classification, the design of the Pre-constructional excavation layout, cut and fill procedure and slab design.

    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career episode 3 and its solution

The existing tree which was 7m away from the corner of the slab which had effect during the design phase of the slab. The tree was absorbing a lot of water hence drying the soil around it and forced the slab to move. Initially, Author planned to remove the tree, but this technique would result in too much water which could also move the slab. So, he conducted research to find out possible measures to solve this problem without removing it. He found that the use of a thicker beam could make the slab more rigid. Also, the piers could eliminate seasonal influence due to tree and raffle slab could be used to accommodate the tree drying.
