    Engineering Technologist Career Episode 1

Project Name: Slope Stability Analysis of Iron Ore Mines Using FLAC

Project Type: Academic Based Career Episode

Demographics: The various amount of work done in this episode helps in the clarification of author endeavor for this project which he had submitted in order to achieve the degree of Bachelor of Technology in Mining Engineering from “university name”. He accomplished the majority of tasks in this project with expert advice given by “supervisor name”, who was assigned as his supervisor for this work. He made a final submission of this report in April of 2014.

    Engineering Activities of Engineering Technologist:

    1. To bring together abundant realizations regarding the important factors of the mining as well as slope stability in order to succeed in executing this project work.
    2. To enhance his knowledge regarding various modelling technique, which consisted of the continuum as well as discontinued modelling and hybrid technique.
    3. To come to the conclusion that due to these bench failures, he developed his interest in the management of the mine in order to maintain production along with certain specific safety concerns.
    4. To perform various geotechnical investigation fundamental for this work.
    5. To conduct the necessary parametric studies with the help of numerical models developed in the FLAC/SLOPE software in order to observe the consequence related to the depth of 10m-250m.
    6. To investigate the geological structure of the mine.
    7. To collect various physicomechanical properties required for this project and perform specific parametric studies.
    8. To select a suitable mesh with suitable consideration of time availability as well as the modeller
    9. To gather remarkable results and have a discussion related to the outcome.
    10. To develop the necessary conclusion and recommend some future works for this project.
    11. To recommend using the piezometric monitoring and slope moment measurement in order to improve the reliability of the model

    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career Episode 1 and its solution

During the development of the FLAC model for a depth of 30m of various slope angles, author was able to notice some abnormal development of the models in the software. After consulting with his supervisor, he was asked to vary the safety factor for each model. Previously, he had kept a constant safety factor for each slope angles. For this, he developed a table regarding the safety factor for various depth and slope angle, which helped him to develop an appropriate model in the FLAC software.

    2. Problem 2 Career Episode 1 and its solution

While developing the graph of safety factor with respect to slope angle, he found that the graph obtained for the depth of 50 m was absurd. He noticed the increment in the safety factor with the increase in the slope angle for the given depth. Later, when he performed the through check for the collected data, he observed that the factor safety was given in an appropriate order. He quickly made suitable changes and obtained the required graph in the end.

Engineering Technologist CDR Sample Career Episode 2

Project Name: Investigation on Fragmentation of Rocks

Project Type: Academic Based Career Episodet

Demographics: The project was performed while author was pursuing his bachelor degree in Mining Engineering from “university name “which is located in Banaras of India. He had this project initiated in April 2014 and came with the final conclusion in October 2014. “Supervisor name” helped me throughout the project.

    Engineering Activities of Engineering Technologist:

    1. Ahead of the project initiation, to study a different approach for the analysis of limestone fragment for the project implementation prospect.
    2. To provide diffusion light, which was not sharp, and each of the fragment was equally lightened and surrounded by thin and uniform shadow.
    3. To develop the implementation method in different phases, which helped to simplify the execution of the project.
    4. To took digital images of the blasted muck piles of limestone rocks for the sampling purpose by capturing their photograph.
    5. To transfer those digital images to the WipFrag system for digital analysis.
    6. To execute a single image analysis in the WipFrag system and acknowledged the output obtained.
    7. To perform an analysis for multiple images in the WipFrag system and discussed the result obtained.

    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career Episode 2 and its solution

During project author captured all the sample in the automatic mode of the camera, and when he supplied them to the WipFrag, he found that they needed to be edited more for higher quality and clear information. They passed a different filter which washed-out much important information. Therefore, he had to take the reshoots sample in manual mode by adjusting ISO for high-quality images. He managed to get equally bright and uniform shadow images which were best for WipFrag analysis. Those image samples didn’t have to pass through any filter. He was able to get high-quality images.

    2. Problem 2 Career Episode 2 and its solution

While taking the picture, it was important to maintain the horizontal axis of the camera normal to muck pile, but it was practically impossible to maintain that angle which for obtaining the condition. With that image sample, it’s hard to get precise information. He tackled this problem by capturing the image just in front of the muck pile with the horizontal axis of the camera with the same angle as the face of the muck pile. He also used tilt option in WipFrag for arranging the tilt to appropriate orientation and maintained horizontal axis normal to muck pile. Thus obtained image was precise for analysis.

    Engineering Technologist Career Episode 3

Project Name: Ventilation System in Mines

Project Type: Academic Based Career Episode

Demographics: The project was conducted as a partial requirement for the award of Bachelor’s degree in technology. Author completed this project in 6 months at “university name “in Varanasi, India. He coordinated with a group of teammates for conducting the project.

    Engineering Activities of Engineer Manager:

    1. To do a literature review to grab an understanding of existing ventilation systems in mining industries and energy-saving approaches and then presented a proposal report to the department.
    2. To subdivide the workload into smaller tasks and assigned them among the project team members as per their expertise and will.
    3. To sketch a Gantt chart to schedule all these smaller activities and also set a submission deadline for each of the project.
    4. To propose a suitable power supply and three phase induction motor for the system.
    5. To use V-belt arrangement for coupling and backward curved centrifugal fans for the system.
    6. To use a mechanical method based on the principle of controlled slippage created between fan and fixed speed motor.
    7. To minimize SEF at various operating conditions to obtain the peak performance for a fan as per specifications and standards.
    8. To review all the activities and proceeded to draft a final project report.
    9. To formally present a proposal report to the department accounting all the important information cited above.

    Problems & Solutions

    1. Problem 1 Career episode 3 and its solution

As an electrical approach, author earlier had used Variable Frequency Drives as a fan speed flow controlling device. However, during the operation, the ventilation system stopped frequently. He checked to see for a reason but couldn’t find one. Hence, he called for a meeting with the project supervisor. He inspected the system and told that the incompatibility of VFD with the motor specification might have caused the problem. Therefore, he suggested him to go for a mechanical method of speed control.

    2. Problem 2 Career episode 3 and its solution

The power supply required for the ventilation system was driven from the national grid connection. The underground mines suffered significant losses when occasional abruption occurred in the supply. Hence, he interacted with the officials to discuss the alternatives. After a few meetings, it was concluded that the electrical power would be generated on-site by the industry.
